Learning from what we know by Ayerim Riera, Business and Personal Coach, and Professional Facilitator
People learn in a unique and individual way according to their talents.
‘Intelligence is composed mostly of imagination, insight, things that have nothing to do with reason.’ – Vivienne Westwood
That’s the reason why the objective of the education system should be to reinforce those talents, designing activities that allow the students to learn based on their own strengths.
According to Howard Gardner, author of the ‘Multiple Intelligences Theory’, intelligence is a dynamic structure that keeps on developing learning during the whole life.
This theoretical approach allows us to identify the way people learn as well as how they work based on their best talents.
Gardner pointed the existence of nine intelligences:
- Verbal-linguistic intelligence: ability to read, write and communicate with other people. People show interest by rhythm/meaning of the words.
- Logical-mathematical intelligence: ability to calculate and thinking with systematic logic or numeric patterns.
- Musical intelligence: ability to create and appreciate music as well as to follow rhythms.
- Visual-spatial intelligence: capacity to think in images and to visualize in an abstract way.
- Body-kinesthetic intelligence: ability to control corporal movements and to solving problems through physical abilities.
- Interpersonal intelligence: ability to cooperate in order to set interpersonal relationships and sensitivity to other’s mood.
- Intrapersonal Intelligence: ability to reflect, recognize and process the own thoughts, feelings, values and beliefs.
- Naturalistic Intelligence: ability to make distinctions in the natural world.
- Existential Intelligence: ability and sensitivity to handle topics related to human nature.
Every individual has all these intelligences, not all of them developed in the same manner but the important thing is that, those less developed can be modified, nurtured and reinforced through those that are strong.
Based on this theory, teachers can develop many strategies and methodologies that consider the interests, capacities, learning styles and needs of their students, giving them the chance to explore, to move, to be active, working alone or in groups, among any other possibilities and then, making the learning a significant experience.
